On a quiet Sunday morning, I had grand plans to visit the Farmer’s Market for fresh leche de coco, but as fate would have it, I never made it there. Instead, I found myself frantically waking up, trying to log onto a VPN to connect to YouTube TV.

Growing up with a British mother in America, I inherited her love for sports, especially during major matches and games. Being away from the USA recently made me realize how comforting and familiar ‘sport’ can be.

All I wanted that morning was to curl up under our cozy pinstripe duvet cover and watch the Wimbledon final, having missed many of the earlier matches. Wimbledon holds a special place in my family’s heart—my grandparents even had the chance to attend once.

It embodies everything we cherish: the blend of fashion, meticulous production design, fierce competition, national pride, athlete dedication, captivating narratives, disciplined branding, and high mental stakes. It truly stands as a pinnacle of sporting events, drawing actors, entertainers, and investors from around the globe year after year.

As the final match unfolded, I watched with bated breath as young Carlos Alcaraz from Spain faced off against Novak Djokovic from Serbia, one of the game's most lethal and iconic players. Djokovic, renowned for his quiet, strategic play, holds the unique title of reigning champion across all four majors simultaneously and on three different surfaces.

Cheering and gasping through each point, I witnessed Carlos initially taking the lead, only to see it slip away as Djokovic mounted a fierce comeback. Four consecutive points lost to Djokovic left all of us visibly rattled, but what struck me was his reaction—a smile, a laugh, and calm self-talk amidst adversity.

In a pivotal moment, despite seemingly facing defeat, Carlos appeared unfazed. He not only accepted his situation but seemed to relish the challenge. How could someone endure what felt like an impending defeat in such a high-stakes match without crumbling in frustration or despair?

On that Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz taught me the essence of a true champion. Champions know how to channel their energy positively. They find joy in every moment, even in adversity, using each setback as a stepping stone to growth.

They relish opportunities to compete against the best, knowing it’s where they evolve. While others may see defeat, champions lay the foundation for their victories through unwavering self-belief and grace under pressure. They understand the power of their own words and use them to build resilience.

Champions know how to win because they can be with the idea of losing without falling apart. Champions know how to speak to themselves with the utmost accountability and affirmation. Champions have FUN while they play.

This revelation extends beyond tennis. It invites us to consider how our language shapes our thoughts, behaviors, and realities. Words are not just tools of communication but instruments that mold our perceptions and shape our destinies. Research in neuroscience underscores this, revealing how being aware + optimist can enhance self-esteem and motivation, while negative self-talk can undermine performance and well-being.

Studies from institutions like the University of Oxford and Stanford University Medical Center demonstrate that athletes and patients alike benefit significantly from positive self-talk and the reframing of challenges. These findings emphasize the transformative potential of language in enhancing our lives.

Though many of us may never step onto Wimbledon's hallowed courts, Alcaraz’s example offers a profound lesson in applying mindful language and play into our daily lives because ultimately life is a game. Each word we choose has the power to influence our reality and shape our journey toward personal growth and fulfillment.

As Carlos joins the ranks of tennis greats with his recent achievements, let’s embrace the limitless possibilities that language offers us in crafting a resilient and empowered future.
